Feng Shui Plant Guide for the 2027 Fire Goat Year

The Chinese New Year begins on Feb. 6, 2027, ushering in the Year of the Fire Goat. In traditional feng shui thinking, this is a fiery, Earth-heavy year, so many practitioners use plants — living wood and water energy — to cool and balance a home. Not all greenery is helpful in 2027, though. The annual flying star chart determines which rooms welcome plants and which are better left quiet.

Feng shui is not a science, and interpretations vary. But these are the most common traditional recommendations.

Read the 2027 chart first

  • Centre — 9 Purple (prosperity): healthy leafy plants, such as palms, are welcome here.
  • South — 4 star (romance and study): peace lilies and orchids work well.
  • Southwest — 6 star (stability): ZZ plant or bonsai.
  • Northwest — 1 star (career): lucky bamboo or pothos on a shelf.
  • East — 7 star (loss): water-grown plants are better than dry-soil ones.
  • Southeast — 8 star (wealth): jade plant or other soft-leafed succulents.

Plants for wealth and career

  • Rubber plant — a steady wealth symbol; place it in the northwest home office.
  • Jade plant — classic money plant for the southeast.
  • Lucky bamboo in water — ideal for the northwest career area and the east.
  • Pothos — good for career energy, but keep it off desks and bedsides.

Plants for harmony, health and romance

  • Peace lily — place in the south to support romance and study.
  • Orchids — pink or white varieties are preferred.
  • Peony — use fresh blooms only, and remove them before they fade.
  • Jasmine or gardenia — soft fragrance and gentle energy.
  • Snake plant — acceptable if kept in a rounded pot, but never point its leaves toward seating.
  • Areca or bamboo palm — good for the centre of the home.
  • Aloe vera — practical for the kitchen or bright windowsill.
  • Chinese evergreen — works in low light and often has red or pink markings.

Plants for protection and stability

  • ZZ plant — tough and low-maintenance; place in the southwest.
  • Bonsai — a well-kept pine or juniper bonsai suits the southwest stability area.
  • Outdoor bamboo — better placed outside than indoors.

Where plants should not go in 2027

  • North (5 Yellow — misfortune) and West (2 — illness): avoid plants in these areas. Traditional advice is to place metal remedies instead, such as a brass bowl, metal wind chime or six coins.
  • Northeast (3 — quarrel): avoid large wood-energy plants here. Red cushions, lamps or small red accents are preferred.
  • East: this area already carries a “loss” star, so if you want greenery, choose lucky bamboo in water rather than big potted plants.

General plant rules for 2027

  • Avoid cacti and spiky plants indoors — their sharp energy is considered unfriendly.
  • Never keep dead, dried or wilting plants.
  • Do not place large plants in bedrooms; one small plant is usually fine, but many are thought to overstimulate rest.
  • If you use artificial plants, keep them clean and realistic — real plants are considered stronger.
  • Prune and water regularly; a neglected plant is worse than none at all.

In the Fire Goat year, the goal is balance: enough wood to steady the fire, enough water to cool it, and plenty of soft, rounded leaves to keep the home calm.
